Random Acts of Kindness Week

February 12-18 was Random Acts of Kindness Week. The event was practiced by many school across the nation, and HSCHS was no exception. This week was set aside to give people an idea that it doesn’t take much to light up someone’s day. Though these acts don’t require much like anything that is done/taught  “It has to be modeled and acknowledged and reinforced” as Dr. Jeb Schenck put it.

Photo By: Eric RangeThe meaning of Kindness is the state of being gentle and considerate so the true meaning of this week could also be to be considerate to others without planning it out. This is the true purpose of the week to show people that a kind act does not need to be elaborate just something simple and small that doesn’t require much thought.

Addiction

Addictions are a major problem in today’s world. Most people who are addicted are addicted to drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. Many of the people who fall victim to addiction are ages 12-20. It is around this age that peer pressure is prevalent.  11% of the alcohol consumption in the U.S. is from people ages 12-20, and  68% of seniors (12th grade) have tried alcohol.  Teen alcohol users are responsible for 200,000 ER trips, and 4,300 deaths of kids under the age of 21 each year.

Marijuana is the most commonly used drug among high schoolers. About 3,300 students try marijuana every day. Along with marijuana, there are several other drugs commonly used among addicts. Amphetamines, Adderall, opioid painkillers, oxycodone, sedatives, and cocaine are among these drugs.

Drugs have a major effect on your body. Drugs can cause serious damage to your brain. They can interfere with your neurotransmitters that connect to your brain. “They relay signals between nerve cells, called neurons. The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, and your stomach to digest.” (http://www.neurogistics.com/the-science/what-are-neurotransmitters) Along with that it causes memory problems and reduces the ability to feel emotion, and addicts may experience learning problems.

All of these things can even affect the outer appearance of an addict. Most people don’t realize that by having an addiction it doesn’t only have a negative effect on their body, but how they look to other people. This can impact relationships addicts have with people. Many addicts are unaware of the damage they do to themselves and their loved ones. Many also don’t have the help they need to quit. There are many online resources to help addicts drop their addictions.
