The Speech & Debate Wyoming National Qualifiers recently took place on March 16-18 where half of the state was competing to qualify for nationals in Birmingham, Alabama. The tournament, which was the last of the season, took place in Casper, and lasted three days.
Eight HSCHS students competed in several different events including Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, and POI (Program Oral Interpretation). The team was comprised of Freshmen and Sophomores Breeze Petty, Reilly Russell, Tyler Kay, Katie Burrows, Hannah Hu, Ashley Brawley, Aaron Hanson, and Courtney Jeunehomme. This was the first year that any of them had participated in Speech & Debate, and the season was filled with learning, and overcoming the obstacles that came with the activity.
As a whole, the team did well for this being their first national qualifying meet. Although not everyone made it very far in the tournament, there was a pair of students who advanced to the final round. Katie Burrows and Tyler Kay placed 5th overall in Duo Interpretation with their piece “1-800”, ending the season strongly. Regarding the end of the Speech & Debate season, Coach Cindy Glasson said, “It was amazing. I watched students go from not knowing what they were getting themselves into to real contenders for the national tournament. It has been a growing season for the students and myself as we went from strangers to a real team. I can hardly wait to see what the next few years are going to bring!”
