Wyoming State Drama recently took place over the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of December at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. At State Drama, there are performance events and technical design events that students compete in.
Performance events include monologues, duets, musical theatre, GPA (Group Performance Act), Arena, and Proscenium. Technical design events include realistic and fantasy makeup, costume, scene, lighting, publicity, and original script. This year, Hot Springs County moved up to the 3A category competing with 8 other schools in these events. Awards are given out to the top three individuals in each event, as well as All-State Medals for those individuals who stood out amongst their peers.
Katie Burrows earned a Superior, the top score, in her Musical Theatre Solo category, and also earned an Honorable Mention for her role in the humorous duet with Tyler Kay, which took 13th place. Aaron Hanson and Ryan Slagle both earned an All State Medal for their humorous duet, which took 11th place. Chauncey Morris took 5th place and an All State Medal for her humorous monologue. Emily Anderson and Aaron Hanson both received 15th place in Dramatic Monologues, a category which had over 50 competitors. The proscenium one act show, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, took 6th place overall with Aaron Hanson and Tyler Kay receiving an Honorable Mention and Deanna Owings receiving an All State medal.
In first year costume design, Chauncey Morris took 1st place and Hannah Hu took 10th place, with both students receiving an All State medal for their work. In the makeup categories, Stormy Cox took 2nd place in both third year Realistic Makeup and first year Fantasy Makeup. She also received an All State Medal for her third year design. Ashley Brawley took 7th place in first year Fantasy Makeup. Ben Manning took 4th place in third year Fantasy Makeup and also received an All State Medal. Hannah Hu took 2nd place and an All State Medal with her first year Realistic Makeup Design. Savanna Meier took 6th place with her first year Realistic Makeup design.
Dakota Prosser took 5th place with his second year Lighting Design. Mikayla Lanik took 8th place with her Lighting Design in the second year category. In first year Scenic Design, which had over 30 competitors, Breeze Petty took 11th place and Darian Macie took 15th. Krynn McGinty took 15th place in first year Publicity, which had over 30 competitors. Emily Anderson took 15th place with her Original Script – Duet in a category with 20 competitors. Mikayla Lanik and Krynn McGinty both took 15th place with their Original One Act scripts, which had 22 competitors. Savana Meier received 14th place with her Original Monologue script, which also had over 30 competitors.
Overall, the HSCHS Drama Team took 4th place out of 9 schools in the 3A category, missing 3rd place by a 2 point margin. Mary McGillivray, the high school drama coach said “I am very proud of them and all of their hard work!”
